#blogjune Post 21 - Another missed post

So I missed another post.  Well, yesterday I had to be super quick getting ready to work so had no time to post in the morning, then in the evening I had no motivation left to post - so slack me, slap my wrist!!

On Sunday, my friend and fellow librarian wrote a post about brand identification.  She wrote about how the marketing of electronic resources in libraries is often left to the library staff.  Where she felt the vendors that sell libraries these products had great responsibility to market their products or brands.

I had a staff meeting yesterday and raised this with my staff.  I said it was interesting how lots of library visitors ask us about Ancestry.com because they saw the advertisement on television.  We don't have access to the commercial Ancestry.com but we do have access to the library version.  But it was the point that the television advertising got them asking.  Ancestry.com has done this well.  And with shows like "Who do you think you are?" being popular, it has also brought to light online resources like Trove.

I remember a few years back, our neighbour Coffs Harbour Library doing a series of television advertisements on home library service.  The result was a number of people coming to our libraries asking if we did home library service because the advertisement said libraries do.  So even though the advertisement was from a different library service, the viewer only noted library and the service, and assumed all libraries are the same so they must all do it.

So then you would think vendors would have it easy.  Create a generic advertising campaign.  Mention their resource, mention library and da da - people will seek out their library to use the product.

But then you must ask, what is in it for them?  The vendor doesn't really gain more money from this, or do they??  If more users are using the resource then the library service is more likely to continue providing access and purchasing the subscription.

Like my friend said in her post, posters, in house advertising etc only targets the users who already are on board and seeking this out.  Let's target those that don't know about all the electronic resources that libraries offer.

I recently ran an advertising campaign on our local radio stations promoting our online resources to those that can't get to the library because of time restraints or opening hours not meeting their needs.  It highlighted the ebooks, eAudio books, eMagazines and eMusic collections that our library service provides.  It mentioned you only have to come in to join and then you never have to set foot in the library again!  Just out of this advertising campaign I had 4 people that mentioned they had heard the advertising on radio join the library because they didn't know we had those resources.  I imagine more joined because of this but didn't mention the advertising they heard.

So yes, vendors should spend time advertising - a generic program is really all they need to cover all library services.  And libraries should do some advertising that goes beyond the walls to those that don't come through the doors.

Blog June Double Post 12 and 13

Yep, I'm playing catch up again.  I was mentally exhausted after finishing work yesterday so no post last night.  I can't understand why I was so tired when we had a shorter working week - anyone else feel the same?

Yesterday we had a backpacker in the library.  As there is only one staff member on (usually) Thursday and Friday, we close for an hour for a lunch break.  I was just about to close up the library when he asked if the local pubs would be showing the FIFA women's soccer match.  Canada and New Zealand were playing and he was Canadian.

First I looked up if it was being broadcast and what station it was on - SBS One.  Then I contacted the pub with the more televisions - under the advice of other library users that they would more likely be able to show various channels if they have more than one television - and asked if they would be able to put one of the televisions on SBS One so the backpacker could watch his soccer match.  The backpacker had also asked if they had wifi, so I asked that too.  And the pub said they could do both so off went the backpacker, and I got to feel satisfied at completing a left of centre reference query!

Today was Social Run Saturday.  However, I had to run 13km according to my marathon training plan, so I ran 5km with company and 8km on my own.  It was bit of a tough run as where we ran today has lots of hills.  But breakfast is always a good motivator!!

After breakfast, I headed home and then straight back out the door to Aldi as they were having their fitness gear sale.  Unfortunately, they did not have any medium size long compression tights left so I missed out there but did managed to get a 3/4 pair and 2 fitness jackets.

Aldi is a dangerous shop for me to enter as I usually go a bit crazy and buy lots and lots of things.  Today was no different.   I always think I'm saving money and stocking up but I really should just come in and get what I need and not grab things off the shelf that I think members of my family might like to try!

Miss A is having a friend sleep over tonight and there is nothing on television so after completing this post, I will most likely lurk on FB and catch up on what others have been doing.  Such an exciting life to lead.

The mantra's: Proceed as if success is inevitable (good one for me with the marathon coming up) and You're never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream.

On the fourth day of Christmas....

I ran 14.66km; did the grocery shopping (I know, I know, I should be doing it online); went for a swim at the beach; and watched trashy TV (yep a trend is developing).

As part of my training for the half marathon I am doing in March 2014 at the Port Macquarie Running Festival, I am to do hill repeats.  For non-runners, this means you run (with effort) up a hill, walk back down, turn around and run back up the hill, walk back down and so on until you fall over in a heap - well no I believe my training program does suggest doing this a certain number of times.

Through discussions with those that have trained before, the best hill to do this on in my area is the hill road leading to the Urunga Cemetery.  Now those that you are my FB friends will note my post yesterday about my concerns of running this road on my own.  I mentioned my fear of stray spirits/ghosts.  Well, you will be happy to note that I ran this hill today and as soon as the headstones were in my line of sight, I quickly turned around and ran back down the hill.  I had planned on doing the hill again but was just not quite ready.  I noted that even the cicadas stop making noise the closer you get to the headstones - what's with that?!?!

Grocery shopping - the love/hate relationship I have with thee!  A number of people have suggested to me that I convert to online shopping.  Now I really need to see things on a shelf - not sure why but online shopping has not grabbed me.  I need to see all the different brands/prices/specials lined up together in order to make a good purchase decision.  So no online grocery shopping at this stage.  Instead I braved the congested Pacific Hwy and hit the energy zapping shops.  However, all was not lost as the checkout lady made my day by just happening to be free so I didn't even have to wait!!  This never happens!!

Beach - how I love thee!!  After lunch - well really it was around 3pm, we headed down to the beach for a swim.  The beach we go to is just 5 minutes drive from home.  We splashed around for a bit and then Miss A wanted to climb the dunes, which then turned into running up the dunes and down the dunes.  Much to my husbands disgust, I mentioned that this is a good form of training for running.  He muttered something under his breath about training and shook his head.

Trashy TV - yes you are trashy but I watch you anyway!  We (ok my husband who can not say no) recently signed up for pay TV - this time with Foxtel.  Last time it was with Austar.  They are all the same to me.  I was a bit peeved as it is not a luxury we can afford but he managed to get a good deal.  We made some changes to our package yesterday and opted out of the movies and opted in for the documentaries and adventure.  Now it's all Man vs Food and Dirty Jobs Down Under.  Not to mention the Location, Location, Location Australia marathon I watched the other day.  My husband is a night owl so he loves it.  Especially shows like Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventurers - hence my fear of the Urunga Cemetery!

Tomorrow we are in for hot, hot, hot weather and apparently a day of interesting (there is a word the weather guy uses but it escapes me for now) weather.  Apparently, North and South winds will meet and cause instability which may lead to storms - here's hoping!

What did you do on the fourth day of Christmas?
